Achieving Your Career Goals

September 11, 2023

Throughout our lives, a significant part of our time is dedicated to our careers. Whether aiming for the next promotion, switching fields, or pursuing life-long dreams, setting and achieving career goals can be both exciting and challenging. In this blog, we’ll break down the process of achieving your career goals into simple steps that anyone can follow to achieve success.

  1. Clearly define your goals

The first and most fundamental step in achieving your career goals is to define them clearly. Take time to really think about what you want to achieve. Do you want a specific job title, a certain level of income, or a particular role in a company? The more specific and clear your goals are, the easier it will be to work towards them.

  1. Break Goals into Smaller Steps

Now that you have your main career goals in mind, it’s time to break them down into smaller, more manageable steps. Think of these steps as the building blocks that will lead you to your ultimate destination. For example, if you want to become a project manager, you might start by earning a relevant certification, gaining experience as a team leader, and then applying for project management positions suited to you.

  1. Create a Timeline

Setting an achievable timeline for your career goals can help you stay focused and motivated. Determine when you want to achieve each of your smaller goals and your ultimate career goal. Having a timeframe will give you a sense of urgency and help you track your progress along the way.

  1. Develop a Plan

Now that you have a timeline and smaller steps, it’s time to create a plan. This plan should outline the specific actions you need to take to reach each of your smaller goals. It could include tasks like networking, taking courses, gaining experience, and applying for jobs. A clear plan will aid you in staying organised, and ensure you hold yourself accountable on your personal mission.

  1. Learn and Improve Continuously

The world is constantly evolving, and so are industries and job markets. To establish a competitive stance and achieve your career goals, commit to lifelong learning. Take advantage of opportunities to acquire new skills, attend workshops, and stay updated with industry trends. Continuous improvement will make you a more valuable asset to your current or future employer. PRG values continuous improvement as one of our three pillars, find out more about our values and what we do here.

  1. Seek Guidance and Mentorship

Don’t be afraid to seek guidance from professionals who have already achieved what you’re striving for. Finding a mentor can provide you with invaluable insights and advice. They can share their experiences, help you navigate challenges, and even introduce you to valuable contacts in your field. Most people will be happy to help you along your journey to career success, the first step is taking the initiative to ask.

  1. Network Effectively

Networking is a powerful tool in achieving career goals. Attend industry events, join professional associations, and use social media platforms like LinkedIn to connect with like-minded professionals. Building a strong professional network can open doors to new opportunities and help you stay informed about job openings and industry trends. On top of this, seeing others achieve what you’re working towards can provide you with motivation and drive to work harder.

  1. Stay Persistent and Resilient

Achieving career goals is rarely a straightforward journey. There will be many setbacks, rejections, and challenges along the way. The key to success is to stay persistent and resilient. Don’t let obstacles deter you from your path, and the life you want for yourself. Use failures as learning opportunities and keep moving forward.

  1. Celebrate Milestones and Achievements

As you work towards your career goals, it’s essential to celebrate your achievements along the way. Each completed step, no matter how small, brings you closer to your ultimate goal. Recognising and celebrating your progress will boost your morale and keep you motivated.

  1. Review and Adjust

Periodically review your career goals and the progress you’ve made. It’s okay to adjust your goals and plans as your circumstances change or as you gain new insights. Flexibility is key to long-term success.

Achieving your career goals is a journey that requires dedication, planning, and continuous effort. By defining your goals clearly, breaking them down into manageable steps, and following a well-structured plan, you can work steadily towards the career of your dreams. Remember to stay persistent, seek guidance when needed, and celebrate your achievements along the way. Your ideal career is within reach – all you need to do is take those simple steps forward.

The Future of Work: Adaptability

August 14, 2023

Over the last 3 years, the concept of work has undergone a transformative shift. The traditional 9-to-5 job structure is gradually giving way to a more fluid and dynamic work environment, where adaptability is emerging as a quintessential skill for success. As we gaze into the horizon of the future of work, one thing becomes abundantly clear: adaptability will be the cornerstone upon which thriving careers and resilient organisations are built.

The landscape of work is being reshaped by forces such as automation, artificial intelligence, and the ‘gig economy’. Job roles that once seemed impervious to change are now susceptible to automation, demanding individuals to recalibrate their skills and roles in response. The ability to pivot swiftly in the face of technological disruptions will be a determining factor in career progression. Those who possess the intuition to learn new tools and embrace unfamiliar technologies will remain competitive and relevant in the ever-evolving job market.

Key Point: Commit yourself to continuously learning new, emerging technologies to enhance your assets and become a more valuable team member. PRG offers incredible opportunities to upskill your career. Including the Learning Locker, which gives you access to funds which you can use towards an educational course or certificate.

Adaptability is not limited to technical skills alone. The future of work necessitates a broader mindset shift, one that embraces change and uncertainty. As industries metamorphose at an unprecedented pace, employees who can navigate ambiguity with grace will stand out. These individuals will be comfortable with experimentation, unafraid of failure, and adept at finding alternative routes when confronted with roadblocks. Their ability to maintain composure and creativity under pressure will set them apart as invaluable assets to their organisations.

Key Point: Prioritise your ability to adapt to different working environments and hold yourself accountable and open to flexible working.

Companies, too, must adapt or risk shallow downfall. Organisations are recognising that rigid traditional hierarchies hinder innovation and responsiveness. By fostering a culture that values and rewards adaptability, organisations can harness the collective intelligence of their workforce and pivot swiftly in response to changing market dynamics.

Key Point: It’s not singularly employees at risk of the new work system, companies also risk demise if they refuse to step up and evolve alongside the majority. At PRG we continuously strive to adapt our workforce. Through opening new offices globally, to providing flexibility and remote working, you can be sure that PRG are doing our utmost to keep our company moving and dynamic.

Remote work, accelerated by recent global events, has become a prime example of the necessity for adaptability. The lines between personal and professional spaces have blurred, demanding individuals to reconfigure their routines and communication styles. The ability to manage one’s time effectively, stay connected through digital platforms, and maintain a sense of work-life balance has become paramount. Employers are continuing to value self-directed high morale individuals who can excel in this autonomous work environment.

Key Point: Should you work from home ensure to create a distinct working environment and set boundaries that allow you to achieve your goal.

In the grand tapestry of adaptability, emotional intelligence plays an integral role. As interactions become more digital and remote, the ability to empathise, communicate effectively, and build strong relationships becomes paramount. The astute navigator of the future workplace understands the nuances of human interactions, bridging cultural and communication gaps with finesse. They are adept at interpreting nonverbal cues even in virtual settings, forging connections that transcend physical boundaries.

Key Point: PRG has recently launched a new training programme across the company in partnership with Astute Learning. All employees access a compulsory quiz that teaches the importance of respect in the workplace as well as how to recognise and show respect to your colleagues. This is an incredible opportunity and one which will help strengthen the morale and code of PRG.

As we look into the horizon of the future of work, one thing is certain: adaptability is not merely a desirable trait but an essential skill that will define the trajectory of careers and organisations. It is the compass and skill that steers us toward success in any sphere of work. To thrive in the dynamic landscape of our workplace, we must cultivate our adaptability – a skill that empowers us to embrace change, navigate uncertainty, and excel amidst the ever-evolving fluxes of the professional world.

“Companies more confident on hiring” and what that means for you.

August 3, 2023

Employers across the UK are expressing their confidence in hiring new talent despite consistent economic turbulence and as interest rates continue to rise, the labour market continues to refuse its pressure.

A recent article by The Times has sparked curiosity as hiring trends increase despite financial worries. Read on to discover the latest.

A concise and confidential survey carried out by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) discovered that positive hiring patterns increased between April and June despite ongoing inflation worries.

In the month of May unemployment rose to 4% but it was found that in spite of this, a third of employers were still optimistic about hiring this season. In an interview from The Times Neil Carberry (Chief Executive of the trade body) said that

“Businesses across the country are clear that they believe in their business and its plans…While the overall picture of demand from employers remains very robust, the more that can be done by government to articulate a clear plan for growth, the more likely it is that firms will be willing to back their belief in their own business over concerns about the wider economic weather”.

REC’s survey shed light on the unchanged demand for permanent and temporary workers between the months of April to June. Health and retail industries consistently express concerns about the scarcity of workers, which can be attributed to a significant decline in the labour market’s size following the pandemic.

Advancements in technology and digitalisation have accelerated during the past few years, leading to the creation of new job roles and opportunities in various industries. This technological transformation has encouraged companies to invest in talent acquisition to stay competitive and adopt innovative solutions, favouring increased confidence in hiring.

How can I utilise this trend?

To maximise the benefits of this hiring trend, it is recommended that employees take proactive steps to enhance their employability and marketability. Continuous learning and upskilling are crucial in staying relevant in a rapidly evolving job market, especially when alongside a precarious economy.

The increased confidence in hiring seen in this financial quarter is a result of economic recovery and job role advancements. Employees can maximise these benefits by staying relevant through continuous learning, networking effectively, and demonstrating valuable skills and attitudes sought by employers. By taking proactive steps, individuals can position themselves as strong contenders in a competitive job market and seize the opportunities presented by companies’ growing interest in recruitment.

PRG are always scouting for new and diverse talent to join our teams, no matter your qualifications and experience we would love to have a chat. Please get in touch to find out more about us and what positions are currently available.

Fuelling his passion further, he pursued a degree in Psychology and a masters in Sport Psychology, later attaining Chartered status with the British Psychological Society and becoming a registered Practitioner Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). This knowledge proves invaluable, as it enables individuals to fine-tune their interactions and become better team players. Alex Lang, Lead Principal Consultant, spoke about the benefit of the sessions:

“The LMNTARY sessions with Chris were absolutely fantastic, particularly identifying how I can play to my strengths in taking my performance to the next step. On top of that, the spotlight of my behaviours and mindset were ideal in tailoring how I operate within a team setting and avoiding certain pitfalls that may come about according to my preferred state of working. I would highly recommend to anyone looking to become a better team player, as well as moving towards the best version of their working self”.

Isobel Astley-Cooper, Director, also spoke about the impact the sessions had on her management style:

“The LMNTRY session I did with Chris was so valuable and useful for me to understand my management style and how I interact with my team. I have learnt a lot about how to communicate and have used these skills in my working life. It’s been a fantastic resource.”

How to hit the ground running – Tips for new recruiters.

June 19, 2023

Beginning your recruitment journey successfully requires a combination of skills, strategies, and dedication – alongside a lot of patience.

Right here is where we will be exploring all the essential tips for newcomer recruiters heard first-hand from PRG’s most All-In personnel (Josh Jennings, Sam Powell, and Charlotte Combe) who have been through the notorious starter experience.

If you or someone you know is starting out their recruitment journey keep reading or give this a share!

Trust the process.

Although it may be challenging at first to make progress and reap the rewards of your hard work it is quintessential to remain calm and steadfast on your recruitment journey. As you develop your skills, you will slowly see your hard work paying off. Remember if you are in it for the long run, the rewards can be massive, just keep being patient and putting in the hours.

Lead Senior Consultant Josh Jennings comments that trusting the process has been a message that ‘has stuck with [him] throughout [his] career’ and he stands firmly by it. ‘Your activity and input now will make a world of difference in the near and far future. Recruitment is a long game!’ He continues.

Work hard every day.

‘Bring your A game to every day. Celebrate every win, big or small, and target yourself on the metrics that make up a successful placement. Don’t aim too high too early!’ All key tips from Jennings. Setting achievable goals early is the key to hitting targets and boosting your esteem to help you keep going. It will be tough but seeing evidence of what you HAVE achieved will shine a light on what you CAN achieve.

Use the people around you.

Lead Consultant Charlotte Combe urges to ‘Use the people around you, you are surrounded by success, do not be afraid to ask questions. Don’t assume that you know more than the people you are learning from because you don’t.’ Conceit will get you nowhere. Start out with a fresh and open mindset and be ready to learn and grow not just in areas of recruitment but in all aspects of your life. PRG prides itself on providing top-quality advice and training for those who are ready to learn.

Organisation and commitment.

‘Recruitment is a perfect example of what you put in is what you get out.’ Sam Powell contributes. ‘There are no limits to how much you can achieve if you truly want to achieve it. ‘Organisation and commitment are two core qualities that make a successful recruiter and keeping that in mind even through the difficult times will not steer you far wrong.’ Utilise the tools that you are taught and take 10 minutes every day to plan your tasks and outline your goals.

Hit the ground running.

‘When starting PRG you need to be prepared to graft, the harder you work the quicker you will understand and reap the results’ contributes Combe. You should ensure that you commence your recruitment journey in an abundant physical and mental condition to provide you with the highest opportunities to go all in. Healthy eating, exercise, leisure time, and a sustainable sleep schedule are all vital to keep you feeling your best and guarantee you will show up to the office exuding confidence and tenacity.

Learn to reach out.

‘Recruitment can be tough, if you are struggling with anything personal or professional voice this to your manager. They are there to help and you will go nowhere when suffering in silence.’ Combe advises. If you are joining PRG you are lucky enough to be given a plenitude of support systems including, Mental Health First Aiders, People Power Hour, the Employee Assistance Programme, Vector Mortgage Advice, and more.

Thank you so much to Sam, Charlotte, and Josh for their incredible insight.

We are sure they will go far with the example they are setting.

Beyond 9 to 5: Does Flexibility Transform Work?

June 12, 2023

In recent years, flexible working arrangements have gained significant attention as a potential solution to enhance work-life balance and employee satisfaction. Now well into our summer months, nothing sounds better than flexible work provisions to help squeeze the most out of the sunshine and spend less time commuting or within city spaces. But what are the positives and negatives of adapting our work procedures? This blog explores the benefits and drawbacks of flexible working, shedding light on their impact on both individuals and businesses. Continue reading to find out more.

The Benefits of Flexible Working

Increased productivity

Contrary to initial scepticism, some evidence shows that working from home provides an increased level of productivity. This could be attributed to reduced commuting time, the ability to tailor work hours to individual preferences, and a reduced number of distractions that are usually present in office environments. Additionally, a study published by Apollo Technical found that on average those that work from home are 47% more productive than those in an office. Food for thought for those urging the strict utilisation of traditional regimented office working.

Enhanced employee retention and engagement

Offering flexible working arrangements have been linked to improved employee retention rates. Organisations providing flexible work options experienced lower turnover and higher levels of job satisfaction among employees. Higher employee retention can result in large cost savings associated with internal recruitment and training. Check out our blog about employee inclusivity and staff retention here!

Enhanced diversity and inclusion

New research suggests that flexible working arrangements can promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace and diversify the hiring pool. By providing flexibility, organisations can create an inclusive culture that values each employee’s unique circumstances and contributions. Individuals with varying needs, such as parents, caregivers, individuals with disabilities, or those pursuing further education will have an increased abundance of opportunities whilst providing companies with a wider range of talent and skill.

The Drawbacks of Flexible Working

The blurring of work-life boundaries

One potential downside of offering flexible working arrangements is the erosion of clear boundaries between work and personal life. Most employees who work from home often struggle to disengage from work-related tasks, resulting in increased workloads and decreased overall well-being. A lack of balance could lead to isolation and decreased mental and physical health. A daily commute could, for some, add structure to a daily routine and make it easier to schedule time for activities such as going to the gym or engaging with family.

Reduced collaboration and communication

While technology facilitates remote collaboration, face-to-face interactions remain crucial for effective teamwork and innovation. Research from Jill E. Perry-Smith explores how informal communication and social interaction promote creativity and problem-solving. Flexible working arrangements may hinder spontaneous idea generation and hinder the development of cohesive teams.

Potential for Social Isolation

Remote work can contribute to social isolation, impacting employee morale and mental health. Employees who primarily work from home may experience reduced social support and a sense of detachment from their colleagues. This isolation can lead to feelings of loneliness and reduced job satisfaction. It is crucial to stay in touch with colleagues who also work in the same situations as you, to feel connected and grounded.

Conclusion

Flexible working arrangements offer numerous benefits but also present challenges that need to be carefully addressed and thoughtfully balanced out. While there are significant advantages, potential drawbacks must not be overlooked to achieve a healthy work-life balance.

To maximise the benefits of flexible working, organisations should implement supportive policies and guidelines that establish clear expectations regarding work hours, communication channels, and the importance of maintaining work-life balance. Combining flexible arrangements with regular in-person meetings and team-building activities can also help mitigate the challenges associated with reduced collaboration and social isolation. PRG are proud to offer flexible work arrangements to those who are committed and hardworking and provide constant opportunities with learning, development, and performance coaches to enhance our community collaboration.

Ultimately, the success of flexible working depends on a balanced approach that considers both individual preferences and organisational requirements. By leveraging the advantages and proactively addressing the drawbacks, organisations can create a work environment that fosters employee well-being, productivity, and engagement in the evolving landscape of flexible work arrangements.

Earth Day – Our Climate Crisis

April 18, 2023

This week we celebrate Earth Day, a day in which people across the globe will be reflecting on the Earth’s health and paying homage to our home. It’s a vital time to assess the current climate crisis, and how to help.

What’s happening?

Despite increasing climate activism efforts around the world, signs are still looking distressing. With disastrous plans such as The Willow Project being approved, Methane emissions rising, and extreme weather patterns steadily intensifying it can be difficult to know how to help and remain focussed.

Why should I care?

At times, or in general, it can feel difficult to feel motivated to get involved and commit to small-scale environmental activism. Perhaps you feel that Climate change simply won’t affect you in your lifetime, or maybe you don’t have enough time to consider issues that aren’t directly your own. Whatever your reasons, the answer still lies that you should care. Read on for the latest facts.

  • The world is continuing to get significantly hotter. According to the sixth report made by the IPCC that considers our climate, the past decade is most likely to have been the hottest period within the last 125,000 years (For perspective, the hottest period on earth since the dawn of mankind).
  • The Willow project: This recent oil project proposed by President Biden will create 199 new oil pools within Alaskan territories. According to the US Bureau of Land Management, it will generate up to 278 million metric tonnes of CO2e over its 30-year lifetime – the equivalent of adding two million cars to US roads every year. A devastating statistic that has the potential to tip the planet beyond the point of climate redemption if not taken seriously. The good news is that more than 1 million letters of protest have been written to the White House, and a petition campaigned through Change.org gathered more than 5 million signatures and counting –find the petition link at the end of this page and sign it yourself to help make a difference.
  • We have all become partial to the idea that the solution to rising carbon emissions could be to plant more trees. But sadly, relying on planting trees alone will not solve our climate problem. According to Oxfam[i] to achieve net Zero by planting trees would require 1.6 billion hectares of new forests, or approximately five times the size of India.
  • A mass of 750 billion tons of ice is melting every year due to global warming[ii]. 24,000 tons of melting water is added to the world’s oceans every second.

What can I do to help?

It is only through collective action that we can hope to address the challenge of climate change and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come. Although the problem seems daunting, there are many things you can do as an individual to help.

If the facts above are enough to shock you into action then here’s how you can help:

  • As a starting point, you can ensure to reduce your carbon footprint by making small changes in your daily routine. This includes driving less, using public transport, or cycling to work instead of using a car. You can also reduce your energy consumption by turning off lights and appliances when they are not in use. A great way to reduce your carbon footprint is to consume less meat, as the livestock industry is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions (check out the facts here!).
  • Another critical step is to reduce the amount of waste that we generate. This can be done by recycling, composting, and reducing single-use plastics. Choosing to purchase products made from sustainable materials can also help to reduce waste.
  • You can choose to support environmentally friendly policies and businesses. This includes supporting politicians who prioritize climate action and choosing to buy from companies that prioritize sustainability and eco-friendly habits. By using your purchasing power, you can encourage businesses to adopt more sustainable practices.
  • Raising awareness through conversations with friends and family, sharing information on social media, and participating in protests and other events aimed at raising awareness about the issue are all brilliant ways to help. This can involve signing petitions to prevent the implementation of climate-destroying policies and projects. Change.Org is a great place to start making a difference. The platform cuts away ambiguity resulting in an easy and effective tool for climate activism and more. Sign the petition to stop The Willow Project here – Click me to make a difference!

What PRG does to help.

At PRG, we take sustainability and environmental responsibility seriously. We have established a Sustainability Club, which promotes ethical living among our staff and campaigns for environmental changes within our office. Our goal is to encourage environmentally responsible behaviour in all aspects of our operations. To achieve this, we have taken measures such as setting up recycling points to reduce the repetitive build-up of material waste in our office, organising tree planting excursions as part of our office volunteer days to offset our carbon footprint, and applauding the individuals who care for the environment by creating a green-champion award which awards a £50 voucher for conscious living.

We encourage all staff, including those who may not be as environmentally conscious, to participate in our efforts. PRG believes that by taking these steps, we can do our part in creating a more sustainable future and contribute to the fight against climate change.

To finish.

In conclusion, while the issue of climate change may seem overwhelming, there are several steps that individuals can take to help mitigate its effects. By reducing energy consumption, reducing waste, and supporting policies and companies that prioritize sustainability, we can all do our part to create a more sustainable future.
