Mental Wellbeing in a Digital Age

October 24, 2023

Our mental wellbeing is increasingly susceptible to the pressures and challenges of the digital world surrounding us. Packed to the brim with tempting content provoking harsh comparisons, unrealistic lifestyle expectations, instant gratification, and glorified overconsumption, social media can be difficult to escape and even harder to use with balance.

Mental wellness encompasses more than just the absence of mental illness; it is a state of overall wellbeing where individuals can cope with the stresses of life and maintain a positive mental outlook. In this new digital age, constant connectivity and the influence of social media can impact our mental health significantly.

As we enter autumn and winter this year and spend more time solitarily indoors it is essential to prioritise our health and employ strategies to navigate our digital landscapes while maintaining a balanced state of mind.

While technology has undoubtedly improved our lives in many ways from connectivity with family and friends to inspiration for your next DIY project excessive screen time can have adverse effects on our mental health. Negative effects can include increased symptoms of depression, delayed melatonin release, a desynchronised body clock, hormone imbalances, and a reduced sense of wellbeing.

As winter approaches, make it a priority to unplug from the digital world regularly. Engage in outdoor activities, spend time with loved ones, or pursue hobbies off-screen that bring you joy.

You could try;

  • Reading a new book
  • Starting a fitness challenge
  • Learning to cook or bake with a loved one

Disconnecting from the virtual realm allows you to reconnect with yourself and find balance in your daily life.

While it may not be realistic to completely detach from digital platforms, it can be pivotal to adopt mindful digital consumption habits. Be conscious of the content you engage with and its impact on your mental health. Set digital boundaries and unfollow accounts that trigger negative emotions or contribute to an unhealthy comparison mindset. Instead, curate your digital environment to include content that uplifts, inspires, and educates you.

Boundaries are crucial for protecting our mental health. Ensure to establish healthy digital boundaries around technology usage, both for screen time and content. Create designated periods during the day when you disconnect from screens and focus on real-life interactions or tasks that can better your personal growth.

There are many apps that can help you manage your screen time and set boundaries. Opal, Freedom, and Forest are all great options.

If you find yourself struggling with mental health issues this winter, do not hesitate to seek professional help. Mental health professionals are trained to provide the support and guidance needed to navigate the challenges of the digital age. Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength and self-care.

PRG always value the mental health of our employees. Some of the steps PRG have taken to support employee’s mental health in the workplace include the following: People Power Hour sessions led by our HR team which give employees an opportunity to talk about any home or work-related problems they are having. Free counselling sessions, massages, and alternative therapies from the PRG’s free Medicash plan. An abundance of blogs and charity events facilitating the education of proper mental health care. Check them out here!

By unplugging from devices to prevent digital overload, practising mindful digital consumption, and seeking professional support when needed, we can nurture our mental health, find balance and enjoy the positive qualities that technology brings us. Taking care of your digital mental wellbeing will be a lifelong journey that requires conscious effort and commitment, especially when facing establishments that are designed to steal your time and attention. Embrace this season as an opportunity to cultivate a healthy mind and thrive in the digital age with resilience and positivity.

Mental Health in the Workplace

October 10, 2023

A topic which has been recently highlighted more in the last few years than ever before but stills needs more recognition in and around the workplace, is mental health.

There are many preconceptions of what mental health is and in which form it presents itself The World Health Organization defines mental health as “the foundation for the well-being and effective functioning of individuals. It is more than the absence of a mental disorder; it is the ability to think, learn, and understand one’s emotions and the reactions of others. Mental health is a state of balance, both within and with the environment.’

Everyone can be affected differently when it comes to their own personal mental health and when an individual experiences poor mental health, they may also display their selves in a number of different ways including:

  • Feeling constantly tired;
  • Showing signs of stress and anxiety;
  • Being distracted or confused;
  • Working excessive hours;
  • Increased smoking or drinking;
  • Impaired or inconsistent performance (or uncharacteristic errors);
  • Misusing prescription drugs or using recreational drugs;
  • Appetite and weight changes;
  • Changes in sleep patterns;
  • Loss of motivation;
  • Over excitement or euphoria;
  • Lapses in memory or illogical or irrational thought processes;
  • Tearfulness and experiencing low mood;
  • Physical symptoms including an upset stomach, headaches, or joint and back pain;
  • Displaying irritable, angry, or obsessive behaviour;
  • Increased sickness absence; or
  • Reference to suicidal thoughts.

These are some of the early signs which can present when someone is struggling and so as an employer it is important to recognise these signs and act accordingly. Mental health can be affected by external problems and workplace occurrences, which is why supporting mental health in the workplace can be paramount to not only allowing employees to perform to their best potential, but it can also ensure everyone feels supported and has the best chance at at managing their mental health to a good level.

Some of the steps PRG have taken to support employee’s mental health in the workplace include the following:

  • Free counselling sessions, massages and alternative therapies from the companies free Medicash plan
  • Office dogs allowed to create a fun and relaxing environment

The Benefits of Walking

October 2, 2023

Last month PRG completed a monumental charity challenge to scale the Welsh Three Peaks in an impressive 16 hours. Together the group of 20 raised nearly £5,700 for the charity Walking With The Wounded which provides care and support to veterans and their families. Following this, we have crafted an informative guide listing the interdisciplinary benefits that walking provides.

Perhaps this information will convince you to take part in a charity hiking event, pursue a new hobby, or switch up your fitness routine. Continue reading to discover more about how walking could be your vehicle towards better health.

Fitness offers many perquisites to our health, both mental and physical, but physical activity does not need to be complicated or extreme. A walk or hike offers a plethora of advantages and is more accessible to those who might have physical limitations that forbid movement that could be straining. Taking care of our health is of critical importance all year round, especially as we draw closer towards the darker, downcast months.

Walking increases your cardiovascular and pulmonary fitness, aiding in life longevity and peak health. According to studies taken by American Heart Association walking at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week can reduce your risk of coronary heart disease by about 19%. Cardiovascular health risks may be reduced even further by increasing walking duration, distance, and intensity.

Consciously choosing to walk as your fitness of choice can improve your management of conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol, joint/muscular pain or stiffness, and diabetes as the body is able to expend insulin more effectively. The increased blood flow from skeletal muscle contractions when walking can improve glucose inflow due to insulin, and therefore, the increase in blood flow causes the removal of excess glucose.

Walking also assists in actively strengthening your immune system and improves blood circulation to help white blood cell activity. A study created by Harvard questioned 1,000 men and women and found that those who walked just 20 minutes a day for 5 days a week had on average 43% fewer sick days compared to those who only exercised once a week or less.

The constant support required by your feet and legs results in stronger bones and increased balance, as well as stronger muscles. Bone is living tissue and using your feet and legs constantly to support your weight, makes your bones work harder to support you. This consistent support results in stronger bones and increased balance which can lower your risk of fractures and breakages. Studies also show that walking 5-6 miles a day can reduce the risk and onset of arthritis in older generations as well as the young.

Fresh air combined with physical activity increases the chances of a better night’s sleep and can also improve your mood. During the winter, around 2 million people in the UK alone will experience SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). According to the American Psychiatric Association ‘SAD has been linked to a biochemical imbalance in the brain prompted by shorter daylight hours and less sunlight in winter’. Regular walking can be a great way to increase your mood and counteract the effects of SAD.

If you’ve ever found yourself stuck in a creative rut or bout of overthought, walking can be a great way to aid creative flow and clear your head. Walking is also ideal for reducing levels of cortisol, the hormone which causes symptoms of stress. Even just a 10 minute walk could do a world of wonder to your mental health.

Walking may considerably assist your health in the present, but it is undeniably true that by pursuing walking throughout your life you are aiding and assisting your future health drastically and in many positive ways. As we’ve explored in this piece, walking is a simple yet powerful activity that can have a profound impact on our overall well-being.

In a world that often seems increasingly fast-paced and stressful, taking time to walk can be a simple yet profound act of self-care. It not only benefits our physical health but also clears our minds, enhances creativity, and provides a moment of respite from the demands of everyday life. So, whether you’re seeking to improve your physical fitness, boost your mental health, or simply enjoy the beauty of nature, consider making walking a regular part of your routine. It’s a step in the right direction towards a healthier, happier, and more balanced life.

At PRG the health of our employees is of utmost importance, and because of this, we have implemented many benefits to assist healthy living among those in our company. Some of these include free gym sessions each week, a cycle-to-work scheme, and money off medical bills through the platform MediCash.

Charity events such as PRG – We Summit For The Wounded provided PRG with a physical challenge alongside an incentive to raise money for a great cause. We can’t wait to participate in more events such as these in the future that both aid our fitness and those around us.

National Inclusion Week 2023: Taking Action to Make an Impact at PRG

September 25, 2023

National Inclusion Week 2023 is here, and it serves as a powerful reminder of the essential role inclusivity plays in the workplace. Under the theme of ‘Take Action Make Impact,’ this week encourages employers to actively embrace diversity and create inclusive workspaces for everyone. At PRG, we understand the significance of this message and have taken continuous steps to create an inclusive work environment. In this blog post, we’ll delve into some of the actions we’ve undertaken to make an impact, not just during this week but throughout the last few years.

Partnership with ENEI (The Employers Network for Equality & Inclusion)

PRG is proud to partner with ENEI (The Employers Network for Equality & Inclusion), a not-for-profit equality organisation dedicated to providing valuable resources for building diverse and inclusive workforces. Through this partnership, PRG employees have access to a wealth of resources, including free webinars, blog posts, infographics, and a religious festivals calendar. These resources empower us to stay informed, learn, and actively contribute to creating a more inclusive workplace.

Inclusive Recruitment Webinar

In our commitment to encouraging inclusivity, our HR team rolled out a comprehensive webinar on Inclusive Recruitment – The Candidate Experience. This webinar was made available to all PRG employees, equipping them with valuable insights and tools to ensure a fair and inclusive hiring process. We believe that every step of the recruitment journey should be inclusive, ensuring that talented individuals from all backgrounds have an equal opportunity to thrive within our organisation.

Disability Level 2 Accreditation

PRG has achieved The Disability Level 2 Accreditation, following our successful attainment of Level 1. This accreditation underscores our dedication to attracting and recruiting disabled individuals while providing the necessary support to ensure their success in the workplace. Accessibility and inclusivity are fundamental values at PRG, and this accreditation reflects our commitment to these principles.

Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Survey

Our People Team understands that to continually improve; we must gather insights into our current workplace environment. To achieve this, they rolled out an Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion survey across the company. This survey aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of our workplace’s inclusivity levels, identifying areas for improvement and implementing effective strategies to enhance inclusivity across the business. This survey will be conducted biannually, ensuring that we maintain our commitment to improvement.

Programme One Partnership

PRG is proud to be a member of Programme One, an initiative dedicated to challenging bias, improving equality of opportunity, and enhancing equity. Our goal is to remove barriers to hiring Black recruiters, aligning our workforce’s representation with our local community’s diversity. While we have made strides in matching this representation within our company, we are dedicated to further enhancing this percentage and increasing the presence of Black recruiters within PRG.

National Inclusion Week 2023 is a testament to the importance of inclusivity in the workplace. At PRG, we are taking action to make a lasting impact by partnering with ENEI, offering inclusive recruitment webinars, achieving disability accreditation, conducting regular surveys, and partnering with Programme One. We are committed to adopting a workplace where individuals from all backgrounds can thrive and contribute to our collective success.

Achieving Your Career Goals

September 11, 2023

Throughout our lives, a significant part of our time is dedicated to our careers. Whether aiming for the next promotion, switching fields, or pursuing life-long dreams, setting and achieving career goals can be both exciting and challenging. In this blog, we’ll break down the process of achieving your career goals into simple steps that anyone can follow to achieve success.

  1. Clearly define your goals

The first and most fundamental step in achieving your career goals is to define them clearly. Take time to really think about what you want to achieve. Do you want a specific job title, a certain level of income, or a particular role in a company? The more specific and clear your goals are, the easier it will be to work towards them.

  1. Break Goals into Smaller Steps

Now that you have your main career goals in mind, it’s time to break them down into smaller, more manageable steps. Think of these steps as the building blocks that will lead you to your ultimate destination. For example, if you want to become a project manager, you might start by earning a relevant certification, gaining experience as a team leader, and then applying for project management positions suited to you.

  1. Create a Timeline

Setting an achievable timeline for your career goals can help you stay focused and motivated. Determine when you want to achieve each of your smaller goals and your ultimate career goal. Having a timeframe will give you a sense of urgency and help you track your progress along the way.

  1. Develop a Plan

Now that you have a timeline and smaller steps, it’s time to create a plan. This plan should outline the specific actions you need to take to reach each of your smaller goals. It could include tasks like networking, taking courses, gaining experience, and applying for jobs. A clear plan will aid you in staying organised, and ensure you hold yourself accountable on your personal mission.

  1. Learn and Improve Continuously

The world is constantly evolving, and so are industries and job markets. To establish a competitive stance and achieve your career goals, commit to lifelong learning. Take advantage of opportunities to acquire new skills, attend workshops, and stay updated with industry trends. Continuous improvement will make you a more valuable asset to your current or future employer. PRG values continuous improvement as one of our three pillars, find out more about our values and what we do here.

  1. Seek Guidance and Mentorship

Don’t be afraid to seek guidance from professionals who have already achieved what you’re striving for. Finding a mentor can provide you with invaluable insights and advice. They can share their experiences, help you navigate challenges, and even introduce you to valuable contacts in your field. Most people will be happy to help you along your journey to career success, the first step is taking the initiative to ask.

  1. Network Effectively

Networking is a powerful tool in achieving career goals. Attend industry events, join professional associations, and use social media platforms like LinkedIn to connect with like-minded professionals. Building a strong professional network can open doors to new opportunities and help you stay informed about job openings and industry trends. On top of this, seeing others achieve what you’re working towards can provide you with motivation and drive to work harder.

  1. Stay Persistent and Resilient

Achieving career goals is rarely a straightforward journey. There will be many setbacks, rejections, and challenges along the way. The key to success is to stay persistent and resilient. Don’t let obstacles deter you from your path, and the life you want for yourself. Use failures as learning opportunities and keep moving forward.

  1. Celebrate Milestones and Achievements

As you work towards your career goals, it’s essential to celebrate your achievements along the way. Each completed step, no matter how small, brings you closer to your ultimate goal. Recognising and celebrating your progress will boost your morale and keep you motivated.

  1. Review and Adjust

Periodically review your career goals and the progress you’ve made. It’s okay to adjust your goals and plans as your circumstances change or as you gain new insights. Flexibility is key to long-term success.

Achieving your career goals is a journey that requires dedication, planning, and continuous effort. By defining your goals clearly, breaking them down into manageable steps, and following a well-structured plan, you can work steadily towards the career of your dreams. Remember to stay persistent, seek guidance when needed, and celebrate your achievements along the way. Your ideal career is within reach – all you need to do is take those simple steps forward.

Lola Balogun: The New Mentor for the Aleto Foundation in Collaboration with the PRG and Programme One Partnership

September 7, 2023

In an innovative move towards a more inclusive and diverse workplace, PRG proudly announces the appointment of Lola Balogun as the new mentor for Programme One, in collaboration with the Aleto Foundation. This partnership marks a significant milestone in PRG’s journey to address underrepresentation and lead towards lasting transformation.

The underrepresentation of black talent within the recruitment sector has long been a pressing issue. Programme One, which was born out of a collective commitment to drive change, are prepared to address this historic imbalance. Seven months of dedication and hard work culminated in the birth of Programme One on June 1st, 2021.

The equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) agenda in the workplace encompasses various facets, from gender and gender identity to ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, religion, belief, and disability. Each initiative plays a vital role in dismantling discriminatory barriers and promoting a more equitable work environment.

However, Programme One stands out by focusing on a disproportionate underrepresentation: black recruiters. While underrepresentation exists across multiple ethnic groups, Programme One seeks to address the historical and unique challenges faced by individuals of Black heritage in the recruitment industry.

Action for Change

At its core, Programme One is a testament to the power of action. It goes beyond rhetoric and delivers tangible, meaningful change. It challenges biases, enhances equality of opportunity, and promotes equity, ultimately aiming to eliminate systemic racism across Asian, Black, and all minority ethnic groups.

In a world where discrimination persists, the initiative recognizes that lasting transformation requires collective commitment and decisive steps. Programme One is a promise, a commitment that together, as a united force of companies, the underrepresentation of Black talent within the industry will be tackled head-on.

Lola Balogun: PRG mentor for the Aleto Foundation

Central to the success of Programme One is the appointment of Lola Balogun as the mentor. With this new role, Lola brings a wealth of experience, knowledge, and inspiration to the program. As a mentor, Lola will play a pivotal role in inspiring, motivating, and guiding his mentee on their professional journey. His expertise will be invaluable in helping individuals navigate the often-complex landscape of the recruitment world.

Lola said “I am happy to be part of a programme that will help people get into and stay in recruitment. I now get to be the person I needed when I started my career journey”.

A Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

PRG firmly believes that diversity and inclusion are not just buzzwords but cornerstones of innovation and progress. By creating a platform that welcomes talented individuals from diverse backgrounds, PRG is not only breaking down barriers but also creating opportunities for everyone to thrive.

Lola Balogun’s involvement is a testament to PRG’s unwavering commitment to this vision. It signifies a significant step forward in the company’s pledge to creating an inclusive and diverse workplace.

In collaboration with the Aleto Foundation, Programme One is not just an initiative; it is a promise, a commitment, and a call to action. Together, we can drive change, remove inequality, and build a future where everyone can succeed, regardless of their background or heritage.

If you are seeking to be a part of a company that actively implements initiatives to ensure an inclusive and diverse workplace, PRG invites you to get in touch via the link here to apply.

PRG Consultants Embark on the Ultimate Challenge: The Welsh 3 Peaks to support Walking with The Wounded

September 6, 2023

When it comes to pushing boundaries, our team at PRG never back down from a challenge. On September 22nd, more than 20 of our consultants from PRG are gearing up to conquer the Welsh 3 Peaks in less than 24 hours. After the successful 52-mile, 100k steps in a day challenge back in March, we were inspired to take on another exhilarating adventure. This time, our mission is not only to challenge ourselves but also to support the noble cause once again – Walking with the Wounded.

Why Walking with the Wounded?

Walking with the Wounded is an organisation dedicated to supporting service personnel, veterans, and their families in their journey towards employment and mental health. Their incredible work in helping those who have served our country and their families is nothing short of inspiring. We knew we couldn’t sit idly by when there was an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who have sacrificed so much for our safety and freedom.

You can donate here on our Just Giving page.

The Challenge Ahead:

The Welsh 3 Peaks Challenge is no walk in the park. It involves conquering three of Wales’s highest peaks – Snowdon, Cadair Idris, and Pen y Fan – all within the span of a single day. It’s a demanding test of our physical endurance, mental strength, and teamwork. Completing this challenge in under 24 hours is no small feat, but our team is determined and motivated to rise to the occasion. Here’s how our route unfolds:

Leg 1: Bristol to Snowdon (LL55 4NY)

Our journey begins at the PRG Office in Bristol, where we’ll bid farewell to familiar surroundings and embark on our quest. The first leg takes us to Snowdon, the highest peak in Wales. We’ll travel through picturesque landscapes, transitioning from the bustling city to the tranquil Welsh countryside.

Leg 2: Snowdon to Cadair Idris (LL40 1TN)

After conquering Snowdon, we’ll push on to our next destination, Cadair Idris. This magnificent mountain offers stunning views and a rigorous ascent, testing our determination and stamina.

Leg 3: Cadair Idris to Pen y Fan (LD3 8NL)

Cadair Idris will be no small feat, but we’ll keep moving forward with the knowledge that the majestic Pen y Fan awaits us. As we approach the final peak of the challenge, our anticipation will grow.

Leg 4: Pen y Fan to Bristol

Upon completing the ascent of Pen y Fan, we’ll turn our sights homeward. The journey back to Bristol begins.

The goal:

Our primary objective is to raise funds for Walking with the Wounded. Each contribution we receive will directly support their vital work in assisting veterans, service personnel, and their families. With your support, we aim to make a significant impact on the lives of those who have dedicated themselves to serving our country.

PRG Lead Delivery Consultant and Army veteran Christopher Adams spoke about the challenge “PRG are thrilled to be supporting the Walking with the Wounded charity again. Any British Military soldier will know the pain of walking up and down Welsh Mountains when it’s cold, wet, and while you are very tired! So, to give our team a very small taste of what a soldier may get up to will be a fantastic experience for them. Just by volunteering, they have decided to push themselves out of their comfort zone. Testing their mental and physical resilience while raising money for such an incredible charity is something that everyone can take a huge amount of pride in. With wheels rolling at 0130 hours, it is certainly going to be a challenge!”

How You Can Support Us:

We invite you to be part of this incredible journey. Your support can change lives. Here’s how you can get involved:

  1. Donate: Every donation, regardless of size, will make a difference in the lives of those we aim to help. Your contribution will directly support Walking with the Wounded. You can Donate here.
  2. Spread the Word: Share our challenge on social media, among your friends and family, and within your professional network. The more people who know about our mission, the greater our reach.

At PRG, we’re ready to take on the ultimate challenge – the Welsh 3 Peaks, with the added twist of starting and ending our journey in Bristol. This adventure is a testament to our commitment to making a meaningful impact on the lives of veterans and service personnel. We thank you for joining us on this journey, and together, we can reach new heights, both literally and figuratively, and create positive change in our community and beyond.
